Porta Potties in a Nebraska Winter: What Changes

Central Nebraska winters run below freezing for weeks at a time. Porta potties still work, but placement, cleaning and hand washing change from November to March.

Do porta potties freeze in winter?

A porta potty's waste tank can freeze when temperatures stay below about 20°F. From November through March, we add a salt brine or non-toxic antifreeze charge at each weekly cleaning, at no extra charge. That keeps the tank liquid enough to pump. Freezing is rarely a problem with weekly service.

Where should a winter unit go?

A winter porta potty should sit out of the north and northwest wind, with the door facing south or east. A building's south side or a parked trailer makes a good windbreak. Keep the path from the work area and the truck lane plowed. Our driver cannot service a unit buried behind a snow pile.

For more on placement, see where to place a porta potty.

What replaces hand-washing stations in winter?

Hand-washing stations freeze below about 32°F, so we swap them for hand-sanitizer dispensers on outdoor winter job sites. If a crew needs running water for paint or chemical work under OSHA 1926.51(f), place a station inside a heated building. You can also ask about a restroom trailer with heat.

See hand-washing station rentals.

What happens to cleaning after a blizzard?

After a blizzard, we run cleanings as soon as the roads and your site are open. A missed day moves to the next route day. Call us if your crew is back at work before the roads are clear. We will tell you when a truck can reach you.

Winter home projects such as septic repairs and remodels continue all season. See home rentals.
